2003 was a difficult year for me.  I was putting in 60+ hours a week at work and another 2 hours to and from work.  Usually, I would take that time on the road to preview my mixes and then go back and make any necessary changes prior to the final mixdown.  It was a system I had in place that worked flawlessly for several years until the nausea began to set in.  By that, I mean many of the songs that gained in popularity were literally making me sick.  As I had mentioned in my 2002 post, the music was getting deeper and darker to the point one could justify Annie Lennox’s statement that “you had to be on really good drugs to appreciate the mixes of her work.”  In other words, she didn’t get it and frankly I was starting to lose faith as well.

At this point, the 2002 kings of the progressive movement Stephane and Creamer K had relinquished their thrown to the likes of Gabriel and Dresden and Scumfrog.  These guys were churning out the hits as only they knew how to do it and grabbing the top spots in just about everyone’s set list.  How you viewed this was entirely up to your own mindset.  However, even the comments on the Perfect Beat review sections were taking a decidedly negative view of the current crop of productions.  In short, people were getting bored or older and just didn’t get it.  That’s not to say there weren’t some stellar moments in 2003.  In fact, three of my all time favorite club tunes are from this year.  The Bill Hamel mix of Seal’s “Get Together” is nothing short of freaking brilliant!  Equally, Hex Hector’s remix of Sarah Brightman’s “Harem” and Scumfrog’s remix of “At the End” by Iio were completely mesmerizing.

Ultimately, I think the music itself was trending to what was going on in the clubs and circuit parties throughout the country.  AIDS was the celeb cause du jur for many organizations and was heavily criticized for the outlandish benefits that were thrown to raise money for various worthwhile organizations, only to find they were operating in the negative.  The same can be said for the big “circuit events” which operated under the auspice of raising money for local AIDS charities.  Not only did many if not most operate at a loss, but they were nothing more than an excuse to have a party and did little if anything to promote awareness and safer sex practices.  It’s a shame, but this went on through 2004 despite the increasing negative press attention that was being given to these events.  Steeped in work, I dropped completely out of the scene by the end of the following year before allowing myself to be dragged back, once I sensed a new direction on the horizon.

For what it’s worth, these five mixes represent a time capsule of a specific time in the dance industry.  It was a time when the dark underpinnings of house music were worn with pride on the sleeves of it’s biggest promoters.  For better or worse, this is nothing more than a spec of time in an industry that keeps getting bigger everyday.  In short, it’s history and deserves it’s place in the annals of club music.

Standouts on this first set include the obvious “At the End” by Iio and Kristine W’s “Fly Again”  a song about overcoming obstacles and empowering oneself after her very public battle with Leukemia.  Worth mentioning is Celine Dion’s remake of “I Drove All Night” where Hex Hector incinerates the dancefloor with his production and (Yoko) Ono’s first foray into the club scene with “Walking on Thin Ice” which would be the first in a long line of #1 club hits for this unlikely diva; Danny Tenaglia and Pet Shop Boys really worked this one out.

Of all five mixes, this was the hardest to put together and I had to use some trickery to get it to work.  Perfect? Probably not, but damn near close.  The next four were generally effortless and should flow with more ease and consistency.  For those of you who came out or attended your first circuit party in 2003, this one’s for you.  Cherish it now, because you won’t find anything as comprehensive as this anywhere else.  Enjoy!

We have finally reached the end of 2002…yippee!  I think going forward, I’ll split the annual editions up.  For instance, when I get around to 2003, I’ll post the first three mixes one week, and the remaining volumes an alternate week about a month later.  Personally, I think posting everything all at once is a little too much, not to mention the time it takes to put it all together.  Regardless, I won’t be doing 2003 anytime soon.  Instead, I’ll probably do something like another 90s edition, but that won’t be until probably July or so.

In the meantime, I’m serving up the remainder of all that was good in 2002.  I do want to make one little side note that the classic “At Night” by Shakedown didn’t make the cut because I couldn’t work it in.  I wanted to mention it, so as not to think I had forgotten.  In fact back in the day, I had made what I like to call the “orgasmic mix” of this song.  I always thought it needed a little something and the female moans starting in the middle to the end just seemed appropriate for the song.  I put this out on the net and the next thing I know it’s was put to vinyl as a White Label release.  It kinda made me feel proud that people were diggin it, so one little pat on the back for me.

Once again, I’ve managed to pack in some monster tracks from the year.  We have the alternate Moony track by DB Boulevard “Point of View.”  The Lange mix was a big ole trance number that I preferred over the more subdued house version of the original.  Then who could forget the big room tribal of “Dark Beat” by Oscar G. and Ralph Falcon?  Massive is what this song was and the Guisseppe D ‘Hands in the Air Anthem’ was just that…a full out anthem.  Other big monsters were Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama” which by all accounts was about the drama, Kevin Aviance’s “Alive” and the smoldering “You Got Me (Burnin’ Up) by Funky Green Dogs.  Aside from you mainstream re-works by Daniel Bedingfield, Laura Pausini, Anastacia and Paulina Rubio we have some seriously addictive dark underground house by Cassius and Puretone.  “The Sound of Violence” was definitely dark and sinister while “Addicted to Bass” was just pure fun.

With it’s diversity in all things electronic, I believe 2002 was an outstanding year for club music.  Memories is what these mixes are made of and I hope you enjoy them as much as I did making them.  I’m going to be taking a few days off to re-charge my batteries.  I had held up the release of the BPM edition because there wasn’t much worth putting together, even a month ago .  I can honestly say, that’s all changed.  I’ve got a folder chalk full of new promos begging to be heard.  I’ll try to go through them sometime this weekend.  My goal is to keep it down to no more than three mixes, so in order to make the cut, the song has to really hit me by the third note or it ends up in the recycle bin.  I’m going to relax a bit before heading out to the gym.  Rick and I will be going to see Star Trek later this afternoon.  I can hardly wait!  Two weeks later we get Terminator.  I guess I’m showing you guys my inner geek, but I love sci-fi and am particularly excited to see how they’ve moved a 40 year old franchise forward.  I hope everyone has a great weekend and I’ll be back sometime next week with the next BPM edition.  Until then…enjoy!

Moving into the final stretch, the tunes just keep bigger and better.  Starting things off, we have the follow-up to her mega-hit “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” by Kylie Minogue.  Though not as big of a radio hit, “Love At First Sight” proved to be another massive club floor filler.  Proving that her success with “He’s All I Want” was no fluke, Moony came back with two huge hits in 2002.  Represented here is the infectious “Dove (I’ll Be Loving You)” with a darker interpretation from the sunny original by Stephane K  and John Creamer.  Equally, Kim English kept churning out the hits one right after the other.  “Everyday” was released in late 2001 and was scorching the clubs right out of the box with Hex Hector’s slamming mix.  Ultimately, it carried over into 2002 where it peaked in March and solidified her status as one of the hottest commodities on the floor.  Pare that up with the Nicole’s ‘Search’n” and Wide Life’s “I Don’t Want U” and you have yourself some huge big room flame throwers that just wouldn’t give in.  A couple of low-key favorites of mine were provided by Sound From the Ground and Res.  The Mauve mix of “Lean On Me” and Robbie’s take on “They Say Vision” were nothing short of shear house perfection.  Frankly, after putting all these mixes together, I forgot just how diverse and fabulous 2002 was for clubbing.  Probably because I was working my ass off the whole time, I didn’t stop to collectively notice.

Right now I’m really looking forward to seeing Star Trek and then a couple of weeks later Terminator.  Looks like the summer movie season is heating up early this year and frankly I can’t wait.  Yeah, my inner geek is coming out and I love it!  I’ll be back tomorrow with the final take on 2002.  Until then…enjoy!

I probably haven’t mentioned much about my computer lately, so let me tell you what I’ve been up to.  As everyone knows, I suffered a significant loss in pictures, music and important documents last year before having the chance to back everything up.  Once I rectified that, I began purchasing parts each month for my computer.  By April, I broke the bank and went all out to fill in the missing pieces.  The only thing I recycled were the two DVD drives and my monitor.  I had a friend come over and help me out and we put this brand new puppy together in a couple of hours.  He gave me an extra monitor (which I had been dying for) in exchange I gave him two motherboards, 4GB of memory (I had to purchase a different kind for my new CPU, 8 gigs to be exact), my old case, CPU, several keyboards, video card and my old power supply.  Anywho, I went ahead and upgraded my power supply to 850 watts this past weekend because the 450 wasn’t cutting it with my new video card.  I got up early this morning and installed Windows 7 64bit and I have to tell you this thing ROCKS!  I now have a blazing fast computer that has bench marked in the top 2% fastest computers in the nation and I am quite stoked.  Windows 7 was just the icing on the cake.  I’ve been up since 3:30 this morning to perform a clean install and then load all my software back on to the computer.  Needless to say, I am zonked.

Regardless, I’ve got the fourth installment of the Chrome Edition on board for everyone.  I have to say I really like this mix.  From the opening tune by Chicco Secci and Robbie Rivera “Let’s Stay Together” which is uplifting and simply marvelous, right down to the Hex produced power anthem by Gloria Gaynor “I Never Knew”.  You get the massive Dirty Vegas “Days Go By” made infamous in the Mitsubishi car commercial, the bigroom “Safe From Harm” by Narcotic Thrust, the beautiful and underappreciated “The More I Love You” by Andrea Martin, the underground “Love Story” by Layo and Bushwaka! which took the mainstream by storm and the potty mouth Vicki Shepard in “I’ve Got A Feeling” which was canned by her label due to promo leaks that ended up all over the Internet.  What a vault of memories this is.  I could go on and on, but I’ll just let these songs speak for themselves.

So sit back and enjoy or throw your own little retro party.  I’ll be back tomorrow with volume 5 and wrap it up on Saturday with the final edition.  Until then, you know what to do…enjoy!

Sorry for the delay, I finished up volume 4 and 5 this morning, ran some errands before it started to rain again and the next thing I know we’re have tornado and flash flood warnings and the power was out when I got back.  Once I got back up, I went and downloaded Windows 7rc which I’ll be installing tomorrow morning.  Anywho, I got bogged down trying to decide what kind of protection to use with the new system and realized I hadn’t submitted my post yet.  So here it is!

Due to the fact that some last minute tunes that I really wanted came through, this mix, which had already been completed, got chopped up to accommodate the newly added songs.  Frankly, it still works quite well, but you’ll notice the Beginerz “Reckless Girl” posed some transition issues, so I just did a stop start to move into Angie Stone.  I don’t think anyone will mind, but for some reason it bugs me when I have to do that.  I guess I’ll just have to stop trying to be a perfectionist and just get over it.

In the meantime, you have several massive anthems from 2002 included here like the aforementioned “I Wish I Didn’t Miss You” by Angie Stone.  OMG!  I absolutely love this song and the Hex Hector production is absolute magic!  The original samples the classic O’Jay’s tune “Backstabbers” which Hex managed to work throughout the song while maintaining his big room signature sound.  I tell ya, this song will hold its own on any dancefloor, anywhere in the world to this day.  Another big room stabber which bubbled up from the underground was from Goldtrix featuring Andrea Brown.  “It’s Love (Trippin’) was a massive #1 crowd pleaser with it’s warped synths pulsating throughout the entire mix.  And then of course you have Banda Sonora’s “Guitarra G” which just received a 2009 update that still can’t match the original.  Refreshing in its use of the Spanish guitar built around a solid house groove, this was great for those early evening parties or T-Dance on Sundays.  Other notable tunes were not big Billboard charters, but are significant in that they are memorable and moved the floor as soon as the DJ dropped the needle.  You have several off the beat tracks like X-Press 2 featuring David Byrne in “Lazy” (which received an outstanding 2008 Moto Blanco re-work last year), the Beginerz “Reckless Girl” which is comparable to Layo & Bushwacka’s “Love Story” which will be on Friday’s edition.  The song that wins the Party Favorz award for being the most fun goes to Tweet’s “Oops! (Oh My)” which was a massive R&B and top 40 hit but never charted on the dance charts.  The refrain “Oops, there goes my shirt up over my head (oh my), oops, there goes my skirt droppin’ to my feet (oh my)” was a favorite of the boys on the floor and had everyone singing in unison.

One other thing or person worth mentioning is Guido Osorio. Guido Osorio was part of the production duo Razor ‘n’ Guido who had great success on the floors with their own brand of big room house; most notably Kim English’s “Unspeakable Joy” in 1999.  Guido struck out on his own and had great success in 2002, with his name on about 1/4 of the club hits reaching the top ten that year.  Expect to see a lot of his mixes spread out in this compilation.  The good news is that Razor (Peter Orenbach) and Guido are back together and well on their way to recapturing the crown as one of the most in demand production teams around today.  If you haven’t heard some of their Britney mixes, hunt them down.  Though unofficial, they’re well worth it.

That’s all I got for you guys today.  Since I’ll be installing Windows 7 tomorrow with all of my stuff, I’ll post the next installment late in the day tomorrow as well.  Until then…enjoy!

First, I need to let everyone know that I changed out volume one of this mix.  I was working on the final track list for the last two volumes and realized that Anny’s ‘White Lipstick Girl’ was on the first set, when it wasn’t supposed to be.  I had previously caught it when I was previewing the mix and wondered why the transition clashed.  When I went back and looked at it, I realized it was in a totally different key and I had swapped it out for the Craig J version, which I didn’t plan on using.  Anywho, I’ve since removed it from the mix and everything flowed much better.  It will show up where it belongs on the last mix.  Sorry for the confusion.

Moving on, we start things off with the mammoth trance anthem by Perpetuous Dreamer ‘The Sound of Goodbye’.  As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a huge trance fan, but there was no escaping this undeniably catchy big room tune.  For the most part, this mix is pretty dark but delicious at the same time.  Some of the biggest anthems of the year are included here.  Songs like ‘At the End’ Iio’s follow-up to massive ‘Rapture’, Suzanne Palmer’s ‘Show Me’, Deborah Cox’s ‘Mr. Lonely’ and Kristine W’s ‘Some Lovin’ were all massive club hits in 2002.  Equally, ‘Body’ (Reach Out)’ by Faith Trent was huge and signaled the beginning of a successful run on mixes by Wide Life.  Then of course we have the radio flop of ‘Alive’ by Jennifer Lopez, where Thunderpuss did an amazing job of retrofitting the song for the floor, turning it into a stunning house number.  And who could forget the unlikely Thunderpuss re-work of the very young and talented Charlotte Church’s rendition of the ‘Tonight’ from ‘West Side Story’.  Pound for pound and note for note, these songs still stack up.

Having the opportunity to go through all theses songs from 2002 really brings back some great memories.  I’ve got to say there is something for everyone spread out over all six mixes and I look forward to bringing the rest of them to you throughout the week.  Needless to say, I’ll be back tomorrow with volume three.  Until then…enjoy!
