Janet was signed to a five record deal with A&M Records in the early 80s. After the first two albums failed at radio and in the clubs, A&M was none to thrilled with their decision and even less excited about Janet going back into the studio for her third album in 1985. Seeking to take control away from her domineering parents (both personally and professionally), Janet hooked up with music producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis of “The Time” fame. The end result, was a more mature sound with a harder, funkier edge than anything she had ever done. That album was the mega-selling “Control.” With no less than six top ten singles spawned from the album, “Control” set the stage for a new Jackson family superstar.
By the time she released “Rhythm Nation” in late 1989, Janet sealed the deal and all bets were off; she had now entered into the stratosphere of worldwide mega-entertainers. Spawning seven top ten singles, “Rhythm Nation” was a mixture of hard hitting dance songs with a serious undertone and fun carefree songs that mixed well with Janet’s shy and easygoing personality. By the time she performed “Black Cat” at the MTV Music Awards, we began to witness a slimmer and more confident Janet. Once “Love Will Never Do Without You” was released, Janet’s image had morphed from tough little girl, to full out sexy beautiful woman. With the transformation completed, she released a greatest hits album and signed a new multimillion dollar record deal with Virgin Records. With a purported $80 million dollar contract in her mid-twenties, Janet was the highest paid artist in the industry, until Mariah Carey left Sony several years later.
From there, Janet went on to have great success with her releases. That is until the incident involving a “wardrobe malfunction” at Super Bowl XXXVIII in early February of 2004. While I’m not going to rehash the incident with her and Justin Timberlake here, the publicity stunt caused her record sales to plummet and a backlash at radio. No matter what you might think of the “nipplegate,” controversy, Janet is a bonafide superstar worthy of her inclusion in this series.

Possibly the one person who is compared more often than not to Whitney Houston is Mariah Carey. Breaking onto the scene in the early nineties, her debut album spawned four #1 hits and there was no stopping her after that. Well, there was that little hiccup after leaving Sony/Columbia for Virgin for a very lucrative financial deal. Hey, you can’t be perfect all the time and in the end, they paid out her contract and let her go. As the Emancipation of Mimi later proved, it was their loss.
Much has been made about Mariah re-recording her vocals only for David Morales, her preferred remixer. No doubt he’s has been an important part of transferring her big voice to the dancefloors across the world. After going back and listening to a lot of these mixes, I can pretty much bet you she also re-recorded the vocals for the boys of C+C Music Factory as well as Junior Vasquez. All you have to do is go back and listen to the full length originals of Anytime You Need a Friend or Heartbreaker which were more characteristic of David Morales mixes with the big gospel choirs, the prolonged mid-sections that sound like you’ve just been worked over for several hours on Sunday at your local black Baptist church. It’s not likely these were outtakes from the original recording sessions and once you get Mariah in front of that gospel choir, the girl just tears it up!
While I have personally been less than impressed with her most recent work starting with last years E=MC² where many of the songs sound like they should be sung by some 21 year old pop tart as opposed to a true diva with the vocal ability bestowed on her by the gods. If she thinks she needs to keep up with the kiddies, she doesn’t. That was proven by last years Leona Lewis who’s debut album was a worldwide smash and was much more sophisticated and mature in it’s overall tone. In fact, she stands to possibly dethrone the current reigning queen if she’s not careful. Girlfriend, watch your back.
Regardless, the songs contained on this 2+ hours of non-stop house music are a true testament to Mariah’s incredible abilities. It’s for this reason that Party Favorz honors Miss Carey with her induction into the Diva Hall of Fame. Ladies and gentlemen…Mariah Carey!

First, I just want to thank everyone that expressed their support over Rick’s situation publicly and privately. You’re concern meant a great deal to me. During the time that Rick was away, I went on an obsessive compulsive cleaning binge. All I can say is that our place sparkles from top to bottom…LOL. I also went back and took a look at this mix and decided to create several mixshow edits of the songs. Let’s face it, anyone who already has most if not all of these mixes, knows just how ridiculously long many of them are. Often the big name DJs would go off in some direction that had little or nothing to do with the song. I suppose it was a way to showcase their skills. Personally, I think it was an ego trip. That’s not to say that these mixes are not brilliant, because they are. My goal was to go back and provide more cohesiveness to the listener. As far as I’m concerned, if you forget what song your listening to about half way through because it jets off to some alternate universe, then it’s ripe for re-editing. Probably the most difficult of these songs is Jonathan Peters’ productions. They weren’t only excessive, but used a different timing to the beats making it a challenge for anyone attempting to give his mixes a good flow. For the most part, I did the best I could and I think the end result is fantastic, if not stellar.
Given the controversy that has surrounded Whitney over the past years, I’m glad to see she’s back, looking and sounding great (despite what some of the critics might be saying about her vocals, which is typical for a bunch of talentless hacks who think Miley Cyrus is the second coming). Let’s face it, she can still sing rings around anyone in the top 40 at any given moment, including Mariah. I understand no one was happy with “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” as the possible first single and rightfully so. It’s a typical Diane Warren schlock-fest that wouldn’t be out of place as the next American Idol’s first single. What’s good about that kind of song is that it usually lends itself to great remixes. IDKMOS is very diva, very over the top and represents the syrupy melodramatic sentiment that every budding drag queen wants to showcase their best Whitney impersonation with. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing some official remixes (Hex, I can see your name all over this) prior to the release of the album in September.
Ultimately, Whitney’s induction into the Diva Series Hall of Fame serves as a reminder as to why we fell in love with her in the first place. Her beauty, her voice, her class and her fierceness…it’s all here. Welcome back Whitney!

Basically the same as the previous mix, but with two new songs and I swapped out the “Take Me Higher” mix with the 2008 Radboy take. Frankly, as is often the case, Junior’s DMC mix just wasn’t working for me. However, the two new Almighty mixes make it worth the update.
Anywho, for all the Diana fans…enjoy!

Anyone who has read my blog for a while now, knows that I have never been a huge fan of Kylie. Not because of any particular reason, but mainly because I was unfamiliar with her music. In fact, I’d have to say that if it weren’t for the countless requests by you folks for a Diva Series featuring Kylie, this would have never been done. After putting together this mix, I can now honestly say “I get it.” In fact, I have been listening to this mix pretty much all week, when I should have been previewing the mixes I was making for my upcoming Pride Edition. Not unlike Madonna or even Britney, there is definitely magic here and the legions of obsessive fans that support Kylie is not only understandable, but undeniable.
For the most part, this mix fell together quite easily. The varying styles of productions show a wide range of trends throughout the years; including mainstream, circuit, electro and even progressive house. Presented all in one, it shows the diversity and willingness to maintain her public identity be keeping up with the times. There is no doubt that Kylie has had a remarkable impact on dance music and therefore I present and honor her with an induction into the Diva Hall of Fame.
One last reminder; This mix is strictly for members of my Party Favorz fan page. I will be sending out links to everyone who has already joined up. For everyone else, sorry, but being a member has its privileges.
Ladies and gentlemen…Kylie Minogue.

Hello Kristine, my name is Keith W. from the Party Favorz blog. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule for this interview. have compiled a list of questions that I would like to ask you and several more from your fans. So, let’s get this started.
PF: First, I’d like to know how it is that a former Miss Washington goes on to become the toast of Las Vegas and now the ultimate diva of dance and the darling of the gay community? In other words, at what point in your life did you decide this is really what you wanted to do?
KW: Hi Keith: I worked my tail off doing thousands of shows 6 nights a week on various stages in Vegas and around the globe to pay my rent .Opportunities came my way while I out there grinding it out show by show. It is very hard work . I have always known I wanted to be a working musician ,songwriter performer. I am the forth generation of performers in my family.
PF: In 1996, my ex and I were about to go on a much needed vacation to the Bahamas. Prior to leaving, I had just received my latest issue of OUT magazine. In it was a review of “Land of the Living” which praised your work but stopped short of calling you “the second coming”. With that kind of send up, I was definitely intrigued and decided to pursue it once we got back from the trip. Fortunately, when we arrived in Ft. Lauderdale a week later, we decided at the last minute to rent a car and drive down to Key West. It was there that I saw the video of “One More Try” in a local bar and about wet myself. The next morning, I woke up and found the nearest record store (remember those) and bought their last CD they had in stock of “Land of the Living”. Once we got back home, I played your album over and over and for every friend that came to visit. I think I must have converted about 20 or 30 people in six months. To this day, “Land of the Living” is my favorite dance album and in fact, is in my top ten favorite albums of all-time . After listening to it in the car the other day, I have to say it still holds up very well. I guess my question to you is, were you disappointed by the fact that it wasn’t as big a hit as your fans feel it should have been? Clearly, “One More Try” is an achingly beautiful song perfectly tailored for pop radio, so what gives? Frankly, I’m hoping that some American Idol diva wannabe performs it live one day. I really do believe there’s a hit there waiting to make you millions in royalties. Just think of Whitney doing Dolly.
KW: ” The Land Of the Living “is a wonderful work and “One More Try”opened the door for emotionally revealing songs like” I Miss U’ . Sometimes you release music that is way ahead of it’s time . People were not being exposed to songs with such personal content. I am not bummed out because music has many lives.
PF: Before I move on to the “Power of Music”, I would be remiss in my duties if I didn’t bring this question up. With the whole Miss California debacle and her response to the question of Marriage Equality, what are your personal feelings about this issue and equal rights for gays and lesbians.
KW: Why should only the straight people suffer!, LOL . I am not a big fan of marriage . I have 2 divorced older siblings . It’s a sore subject .
PF: It’s been thirteen years since the release of “Land of the Living” and you are now about to release your fourth album “The Power of Music”. You have been with a major recording label (RCA Records) for your first two albums and one of the largest independent record labels (Tommy Boy) for your third. Now, you are releasing your latest album on your own label ‘Fly Again Music’. Clearly, you have taken full control of your name, identity, music and career. What necessitated your change in direction and what kind of advice would you give anyone trying to make it on their own in this business?
KW: My advise would be :To do an independent project You have to be ready to work your butt off and surround yourself with smart people that are fearless . This is going to be the wave of the future and so many artists are jumping ship because they see a sinking business model.
PF: You have already racked up four #1 club hits (’Walk Away’, ‘The Boss’, ‘Never’ & Love Is the Look) from an album that hasn’t been released yet. Personally, I think this is a testimony to your resilience and tenacity. I also think you’ve struck the very same chord that popularized disco in the mid to late 70s. Certainly it was a time of unrest, high inflation, high unemployment and things looked pretty bleak. Just as disco did in its heyday, your music provides people with much needed escapism. Was that intentional and can we expect more of the same once the album is finally released in mid June?
KW: Yes , You can always expect music from myself that is uplifting but hopefully connects with you emotionally. My fans letters and conversations are very woven into my songs . ” See My Eyes ,They Carry Your Reflection”. That was my first line from my first album” Land Of the Living”. That statement is still how I feel about my fans . I am no good without their feedback.
PF: You originally announced the release of “The Power of Music” in late 2007 along with another album “Straight Up with a Twist”. What has taken so long to get these out to your fans and when can we expect the latter to drop? Also, how do you plan on touring behind both albums. Will your shows be a combination of the two or will they be separate based on the venue?
KW: They were both very expensive albums and since my shows and appearances have financed them both It has taken four years and many shows to get to this point. This is something I have never done so we are charting new territory together. I hope it works so other artists are encouraged to try it.
PF: Last year, you had the opportunity to tour with Barry Manilow. Did he have any influence or provide any help in the making of “Straight Up with a Twist”? Also, since he’s good friends with the fabulous Bette Midler, have you ever thought about doing a duet with her? I think you two together would be absolutely fierce and a guaranteed hit. If anything, you could approach her with the idea and donate the proceeds to your favorite charities. It’s just a thought.
KW: Barry Manilow is an amazing talent and a great human being . Just saw Bette’s show at Ceasars a week ago and it was great. I hope she organizes a concert to benefit her passions one them is the adopt a highway clean up campaign and she is also into restoring parks. I would be 1st in line to perform ,boy do we need support those 2 causes.
PF: I know these questions are long, but if you’ve ever read my blog or even met me, you’d know I type the way I talk…way too much, LOL. If you don’t mind, I have a few more questions submitted by your fans that I would like to ask.
Phillip wants to know if you will ever work with Rollo again and whether or not “Heaven Knows” will be released as a single?
KW: I love Rollo and we wrote” Into U” for the new album.
PF: Glenn from the U.K. wants to know if you’re ever going to perform there. He says you have an underground fan base that starts with him. He also wants to know if you’d consider recording the other half of ‘The Boss’, ‘No One Gets the Prize’ and what kind of music you listen to when you’re just hanging out. Since he asked the question about touring the U.K., I’ll go ahead and add Canada, Australia, Germany, France and Brazil to the list, since I have a lot of
followers from those countries as well.
KW: I am working with an agent Kevin Moss in the UK to make some dates over the pond happen. I am always open to recording cool covers and will check that song out.
PF: Christopher sent this from his iPhone: Love KW; I still regard ‘Land of the Living’ as the most amazing album of my time and I listen to it on a regular basis; even after ten years!! So while I don’t have a question I would like her to know that her talent is most welcomed and appreciated and that we look forward to hearing that amazing voice for years to come.
KW: To Christopher ” Thanks for the Love and i will see you at the summer shows. Go to my website
kristinew.com or my
MySpace/kristinew for all the tour schedule.
PF: Well that’s all I got for you. Kristine, it is my greatest pleasure being able to ask these questions. I just want you to know that I am a HUGE fan and am looking forward to seeing you in Atlanta where I can hopefully meet you in person and get “The Power of Music” autographed. Thank you for the love, hope and inspiration. I am in the ‘Land of the Living’ and loving it!
KW: Keith, I ‘m sending you a big hug and ” The Power Of Music” , KW
Follow Up: Phillip, Unfortunately, “Heaven Knows” did not make the cut for the new album, however there are other updated classics like “I’m Coming Out” and “Feel What You Want” that are included. You can view the complete track listing at Amazon.com and preview samples of the songs as well.

PF: Everyone rise for the Queen…Now bow, for your Queen!
Loleatta: Could you please tell Miss Ross to bow?
PF: Lady D. proper courtesy when the Queen enters the room is to bow, please bow.
Loleatta: Bitch…he said bow! Uh, uh, no…gurl, I don’t wanna hear it. Now bend your bony ass over and bow! Don’t make me hurt you! Sweetie, if you don’t bow, I’ll tie you up and feed you to the hogs just like Lady Madge, NOW BOW! That’s more I like it.
PF: The Queen has issued a proclamation that henceforth, she shall be referred to as Queen Loleatta or Miss Holloway if your nasty. Is there anything else I should relay my Queen?
Loleatta: Yeah, let them eat cake, I’ve gotta get my nails done!
__________________________________________________________________________
Anyone who has followed this blog for a while now, know that I am a HUGE fan of Loleatta Holloway. Frankly, I only had a passing reference as to who she was based on her collaboration with Marky Mark on “Good Vibrations” back in 1990 and her presence on the Black Box album “Dreamland” for “Ride on Time” which ultimately launched a lawsuit for sampling her work and not receiving any compensation muchless recognition for her contribution. About five or six years ago, I began a journey of researching the history of disco and it’s origins and the players involved. Digging in deeper to learn more about the artists, labels and players that never crossed over into radio I came up with people like First Choice, Barbara Roy, Sharon Redd and yes Loleatta Holloway. I went out and bought Loleatta’s first three albums and quickly realized there was more to this woman than just the disco and house music she became famous for. As evidenced here, she has a huge voice that is easily tampered down when she sings a classic song like “Worn Out Broken Heart.”
In 1990, there was renewed interest in her when she agreed to sing samples of “Love Sensation” (her 1980 #1 all-time classic disco hit) for a studio group named Black Box. The song “Ride On Time” went on to become a massive house classic and quickly spurred many imitators. Unfortunately, she was never credited for her work and she went on to launch a massive press-attack that led to a lawsuit and ultimately was settled for an undisclosed sum in her favor.± She subsequently turned down C&C Music Factory and allowed her good friend Martha Wash to handle the vocals for the now classic “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).” Throughout the 90s she had several #1 and top ten club hits. A good majority of them borrowed heavily from her past work, taking out snippets to recreate an entirely new song. With the exception of the original songs contained in this mix, you will find a good deal of what I call “cross pollination.” Loleatta was infamous for her adlibs during the recording sessions, and it was those adlibs that would go on to be the basis of entirely new songs built around a simple phrase or hook that she created. It’s not clear as to how many of the songs contained herein she was actually involved with or was compensated for. My hope is ‘all of them’. Regardless, I have this long held dream to work with her someday and make a proper album for her adoring fans. I realize time is ticking, but I’m hoping that maybe someday soon, I might be in a position to do this. I know it sounds crazy, but I’ve already got several songs that I would like her to perform and even producers I would like to work on the project. Hey, you have to believe in something, and since there really isn’t much else I want, I’m entitled to this ‘fantasy’ no matter how far-fetched.
Putting this mix together was no easy task. The majority of songs are out of print, but I was able to find many of them available on Amazon through their used CD service. Other songs were ripped from the original vinyl of which I painstakingly remastered removing pop and clicks wherever possible. Unfortunately, I was not able to get a hold of everything I wanted, but I believe this to be the most comprehensive compilation of her work that has ever been assembled into one single mix. No doubt the creation of this podcast has been a labor of love and I am now willing to share it with the rest of you.
The last couple of days have been absolutely beautiful in the ATL. It’s nice to see everyone out and about in their shorts and flip flops taking advantage of the warmer weather. Rick and I started apartment hunting yesterday and should finish up today. With the downturn in the economy and the overbuilding of condos here in Buckhead, it’s become a renters market. Granted, some of these condos we’ve been looking to rent were the same ones we were looking at buying just a couple of years ago. Obviously, things changed when I lost my job. Nevertheless, looking around for a new place has been a lot of fun. You can pretty much name your price. In fact, it’s almost like buying a car. We’ve had several property managers ask us “what can we do to get you into this apartment” and even “I talked to my manager and we can give you two months rent free” etc. We won’t be moving until the end of August, so we won’t be doing anything immediately and I’ll just let them get back in touch in a couple of weeks. Hey, if there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s negotiating. I know how to play the game, which is why I insisted Rick do as little talking as possible when they start quizzing us about “how much we’re looking to spend” and so forth. I hope everyone has a fabulous weekend and I will be back sometime mid-week with the first of the Gay Days Edition.
With that said, ladies and gentleman, please welcome your Queen, Miss Loleatta Holloway…enjoy!
