I thought it would be apropos to bookend Katy Perry with Lady Gaga, since they both crashed onto the scene at relatively the same time. Like Katy, I had mixed feelings about Lady G. I didn’t quite get the hysteria over her. Yes, I liked Just Dance and Poker Face but just wasn’t overwhelmed by her. It wasn’t until Love Game and Paparazzi came out that I began to have a better appreciation of her skills, not just as a writer or singer but as a performer. By the time Bad Romance dropped, all bets were off and I was solidly in her corner. No doubt, the comparisons between Lady Gaga and Madonna were inevitable (if not overblown) and started a ridiculous flame war between both camps and their followers. While working on the various Diva Series the past several weeks, something became apparent to me. THEY ALL BORROW FROM THE PAST! Just look at all the pictures and photo spreads from Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Katy Perry, and on down the line. Madonna was the obvious person to imitate because they likely grew up with her. But even Madge has borrowed significantly from the past to create her persona and if you ask me THEY ALL SHOULD BE BOWING DOWN AT THE ALTER OF GRACE JONES who’s in your face sexual androgyny was raising eyebrows and ire well before some of these latter-day divas were even born. That being said, the notion that Born This Way is a direct rip-off of Express Yourself should be put to rest. If it was, Madonna would have every reason to sue for copyright infringement but at the end of the day, it’s nothing more than fantastical bullshit conjured up by some blogger who wanted to start a flame war between the two groups of fans. THEY SOUND NOTHING ALIKE! If I had any criticism at all of Lady Gaga. it would be that she has a responsibility as a hugely admired public figure with a very devoted and loyal following to tamper any death threats or otherwise directed towards others who seek to criticize her. With fame comes responsibility and while I applaud her for using that fame as a positive force in others' lives, she should equally use it to help tamper down and squelch any comments from her “little monsters” that could lead to consequential actions. At the end of the day, Lady Gaga is the shit and I can’t wait to see how she evolves as an artist in the future. I have no doubt she will continue to be a force and standard-bearer in her own right over the coming years. It is with great pleasure that Party Favorz inducts Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta a.k.a. Lady Gaga into the Diva Hall of Fame. Until the next time...ENJOY! Donate and keep the party going!
