Hi-NRG Gay Anthems Volume 4
Wednesday Mar 06, 2019
Wednesday Mar 06, 2019
We have reached the end of the Hi-NRG Gay Anthems series and all I have to say is WOW! Party Favorz has quite possibly the most extensive series of mixes dating back to the 70s till the present day of any podcast out there and I'm always surprised at how well various sets perform. This series has outperformed even my wildest expectations.
I've been hitting on these classics of varying genres and different time periods for quite some time, each new rollout is like a new discovery for many of you. I cannot recommend enough that if you're new to Party Favorz that you spend some time exploring what this site has to offer beyond just going chronologically through the posts. The site is fairly easy to navigate through the categories and sub-categories. There are over 800 podcasts in total that are still available on the site (not through the streaming services). I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what's underneath the hood once you spend some time looking around.
That being said, volume 4 continues with the re-energized mixes from the 80s and 90s gay anthem Hi-NRG Classics. You'll notice I went with the Hannah Jones version of "I Am What I Am" as the Gloria Gaynor version felt dated. Jennifer Holliday's "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" re-sung the vocals for the Almighty mix but it still stands up quite well. There are three different versions by Almighty, but I went with the one that could easily be dropped in the middle of the set.
The fabulous Katherine Ellis, who has been MIA for a while is making a comeback relatively soon (yes, I've already got the promos), delivers a searing rendition of the Gwen Guthrie 80s classic "Ain't Nothin Going On but the Rent," turning it into an explosive dance floor stomper with 7th Heaven's signature all over it.
You'll also notice that the 1981 Lime NRG classic is a rare re-worked version that is one of the earliest Almighty mixes they ever laid down. It has the signature early 90's house sound that updated the original for that period. Frankly, I think it still holds together quite nicely. I want to thank Marshall for helping me track this down as the quality of the version I had was sub-par.
I also went with Sarah Washington's searing rendition of "I Will Always Love You," which was released well before Clive Davis commissioned Hex Hector to rework Whitney's massive hit several years after its original release. Sarah went on to have a massive hit with the Hex Hector produced "Heaven" by the end of the decade that's a staple in DJ circles to this day.
Finally, I close out the set with the early 80's re-work of the Ashford & Simpson penned tune "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," which was originally recorded by Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell but turned into a massive hit in the early 70s for Diana Ross' debut solo album. In this case, Inner Life did the honors featuring the uncredited vocals of Jocelyn Brown, who happens to be one of our Diva Hall of Fame entrants.
I want to thank Darren H. for his generous donation. Just please keep in mind, I need the money starting in April when the hosting comes up for renewal. I plan on going back to Siteground as they are hands-down the best provider I've ever worked with.
Finally, I want to thank everyone that has made Party Favorz a continued success. I cannot believe I'm in my 12th year doing what I enjoy and being able to share my love for dance music with like-minded people. You are the people that keep me motivated and plowing through.
I'll likely be back by the end of the week or next with a couple of re-entries into the Diva Hall of Fame. Until then...ENJOY!

Hi-NRG Gay Anthems Volume 3
Monday Mar 04, 2019
Monday Mar 04, 2019
Happy Monday or maybe not. If it's bitterly cold, snowing, or iced-over where you're at never fear as Party Favorz is here to put a little sunshine in your day with Hi-NRG Gay Anthems volume 3!
This set pulls from both decades with a few caveats. The late Viola Wills got started in the clubs in the early 80s with hits like "Gonna Get Along Without You Now" and "If You Could Read My Mind" (a remake of the Gordon Lightfoot #1 early 70s classic) is featured here with her rendition of the 1930's torch classic "Stormy Weather" turning it into a hi-energy floor stomper that pulled all the gay boys to the floor.
As for "If You Could Read My Mind," the dance version initially brought to life for the dance floor by Viola was re-worked by Amber, Jocelyn Enriquez, and Ultra Naté aka Stars On 54 and produced by Hex Hector for the movie Studio 54. I used the version by the fabulous Soraya Vivian who under the Fierce Angel imprint has created some fantastic classic remakes with her soaring vocals.
Nicki French took over for Bonnie Tyler with her rendition of "Total Eclipse of the Heart," which was a massive dance hit in the early 90s and given the Almighty treatment. Equally, Martha Wash re-sung "It's Raining Men" sans the late Izora Rhodes.
Frankly, there are a plethora of 80s dance classics in this set that should be instantly recognizable even to the average listener. However, one song that I have to mention is the feminist anthem "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene, which was oddly written by two men (go figure). Charlene was the only white artist signed to Motown Records, and the song was initially released in 1977 and 1978 barely cracking the Top 100. It was re-released again in 1982 where it topped at #3 on the charts for several weeks and was the only hit Charlene had recorded but had a lasting impact.
The cheesy song gained popularity again when it was included in the 1994 movie "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" and has been a drag queen favorite ever since. Charlene re-sung the vocals but used the altered lyrical section of the song (I spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that cost too much to be free) for the dance version.
The truth is, I could go on and on about the origins of various songs and the singers behind them, but my guess is you want to get to the music. In the end, it's all about the memories and lots of fun!
I'll be back on Wednesday to close out this series with volume 4. Until then...ENJOY!

Hi-NRG Gay Anthems Volume 2
Saturday Mar 02, 2019
Saturday Mar 02, 2019
Sorry, I'm late posting this morning, but I was up late and slept in. Party Favorz is delivering volume 2 of Hi-NRG Gay Anthems where I step up the beats and deliver the fun!
I've taken some liberty in the track selection like "Touch Me In the Morning" by Diana Ross was reworked in the early millennium but was originally re-recorded in 1985 by Lydia Steinman. "Your Song" by Elton John (which closes this set out) was never re-recorded (to my knowledge) but re-done by Almighty with Elton re-singing the vocals in the early millennium as well. The same goes with Olivia Newton-John's "I Honestly Love You." Regardless, these tracks fit in nicely with the overall theme and feel of these sets as if they were true to the period.
The intro to this set was the hardest thing I've encountered so far. Using the original version of Divine's "Shoot Your Shot" and mashing with Male 2 Male's "Male Stripper" wasn't working so I had to drop it into another software to get it to pan out. If the beats seem slightly off, it's because the original mixes are not up to par with today's technology. Regardless, I thought it came out well.
I'm guessing there are about two more of these sets, which I'll post later this next week. That should be followed by a couple of Diva Hall of Fame re-entries that need to be refreshed before getting back into new Dance-Club, Circuit Tribal House, Funky House, and Underground House set later this month. Until then...ENJOY!

Hi-NRG Gay Anthems Volume 1
Friday Mar 01, 2019
Friday Mar 01, 2019
Happy Friday everybody! Party Favorz is back with a multi-volume set of Hi-NRG gay anthems from the 80s and 90s that have been reinvigorated for today's dance floors.
The original concept was to create a Hi-NRG compilation of dance tracks from the 1980s. After pouring through most of them, I concluded that a lot of these just didn't meet the requirements for today's music delivery methods (i.e., the sound quality was thin). Sure they sounded great on the dancefloor back in the day, but I just wasn't feeling it. Not to mention, the amount of work involved in trying to bring these up to speed was not a task I was up to at the moment.
Fortunately, the much beloved Almighty Records has taken a good chunk of these classics and reworked them for our modern-day listening apparatus. Combine that with 7th Heaven, Soulshaker, Bassmonkeys, and Wideboys amongst many others and this entire set started pulling together nicely.
I did have to extend the track selection to the 1990s as well to make it work but what the hell...why not? It just adds to the overall fun of these sets. Yes, I could have waited until June to release these but the future of Party Favorz is uncertain, so why wait?
Additionally, there is some crossover from previous efforts but that wasn't preventable if I truly wanted to represent the genre. Besides, there is a slew of gems that have never made it onto any of my previous compilations, so I think it'll be worth it.
So get ready to pump, pump, PUMP IT UP! This series is bound to get you energized! Until the next time...ENJOY!

Tuesday Feb 19, 2019
I thought I'd throw out this unexpected surprise several days early. Electric Dreams is a compilation of the biggest Dance-Club tracks at the moment along with some reworked pop classics from decades past. The end result is truly a wet dream of some of the finest house music to come out in a long time.
What's nice about these tracks is that most of them come in a variety of flavors from Future House, Funky House, Electro House, and straight-up House that my options were nearly limitless. I took the variety option and mixed it up to keep it interesting. You can expect alternate versions of some of these songs on future compilations.
Until the next time...ENJOY!

Rave Machine | Underground with the Latest Tech House
Friday Feb 15, 2019
Friday Feb 15, 2019
As promised, I'm dropping "Rave Machine," the latest from the Peak Hour House Music series and this one is a thumper! It's definitely darker than past efforts but looking back, that seems to be the norm around this time of year. I did my best to flesh it out with some Prog-House and Techno to keep it interesting. However, I'm beginning to wonder if the Tech House genre has maxed out its potential.
You, folks, know that over the years I bitch and moan about the state of the "hot dance genre" of the moment. Whether it be big room EDM anthems with the anticipated drop, the commercialization of Deep House which peaked in 2014 before rebranding itself "Future House" and the more recent Reggaeton trend, which wore out its welcome over a year ago (at least after "Despacito" was a worldwide hit).
While Tech House hasn't actually crossed into the mainstream, its popularity has swelled considerably to the point that there's just not a lot of originality coming out of its ranks. To be clear, there are some great tracks (included here) but it's best to try to mix in other genres to keep things interesting. I may even go back and take a stab at the "Spin Me Around" set I put out in 2017, which incorporated a HUGE swath of genres that normally don't work well together in a set but for whatever reason, I managed to pull off. I enjoy the whole unpredictable nature of sets like that, which also lend themselves to what my music sets are mainly about: having a party. We'll see.
If you want a better take on my thoughts, read "The Epic of Passable Tech House" by Michael Sundius. He touches on the very same things I've been whining about for years but does it with more panache and colorful writing than I can muster.
To any of the artists included in this set, please do not be upset. I ain't ragging on you. You wouldn't be included if I didn't think these tracks were stellar. Quite the opposite.
Take this writing for what it is but don't let it sway your opinion. I worked this motherfucker out and if you're a fan of this series, you won't be disappointed.
As I promised yesterday, I'm going to start work on the next commercial Dance-Club set, which you can expect to drop sometime late next week. Until then...ENJOY!

Disco Glamour
Wednesday Feb 13, 2019
Wednesday Feb 13, 2019
I'm back a bit earlier than expected with the next installment in the Funky Disco House series, "Disco Glamour." This set stays true to itself in that it delivers the finest NuDisco, House, Deep House, and Funky House songs that are glittering in the skies right now!
While this set is as funky as previous efforts, it is a bit more cosmopolitan with more sophisticated tracks. By that, I mean overall it's smoother, has less roughness, and has a very chic feel to it. Maybe it's just me. Maybe it's Maybelline LOL.
My goal is to get out the next Underground House set sometime this weekend so I can clear the decks for the first EDM Dance Club set next week. It's ambitious, but I'm certain I can get there.
Also, I want to apologize for last week's "Winter Edition 2019." After finally having the time to listen to it, this is not my best work. IMHO, it suffered from bloat and could have used some serious fine-tuning. It's my fault as I rushed to get it released without taking a 2nd pass to ensure the integrity of the whole set. My bad. If you like it, great. If you find yourself constantly fast-forwarding through tracks, that's on me. I'll do better and in fact, have done better with this release. Nothing here that's not to like.
That being said, anticipate another release this weekend. Until then...ENJOY!

Winter Edition 2019 | The Hottest Circuit Tribal House of the Winter!
Saturday Feb 09, 2019
Saturday Feb 09, 2019
Given the erratic weather we've been experiencing, the title is a bit misleading. Last week we were in a deep freeze for several days followed by unseasonably warm weather. Now, things have tamped down a bit with cooler temps but it feels more like spring a whole month before we normally would. For now, we'll just pretend it's winter because it most definitely is in certain parts of the country and the world. Maybe, I'll start calling these the Global Warming edition as it relates to each edition in this series LOL.
In the interim, here at Party Favorz it's time to get this party started! Finally kicking the year off, I'm dropping the hottest collection of Circuit Tribal House music that's buzzing RIGHT NOW!
It takes me a while to move into a different mindset after my entire focus had been trying to overhaul the site. Now that everything has been completed to my satisfaction, I can safely declare that I am back in the saddle again. GIDDYUP!
In an ongoing effort to play catch-up, I've scheduled the next EDM Dance Club, Funky Disco House, and Underground House sets to drop over the next several weeks. I've got a great idea for a final 80s dance compilation; a very specific genre that's often overlooked from the decade and possibly some updates to past Diva Hall of Fame entries that need some refreshing. Just so you know, I'm thinking ahead.
For now, I'm sure all the boys have been itching for something new to fuel their workouts in anticipation of looking the best they can for early spring. The Winter Edition 2019 will do just that.
Until the next time...ENJOY!

Blow Your Own Horn 2019

Party Favorz is back with the ultimate New Year's dance party mix, Blow Your Own Horn 2019. This annual series started back in 2013 as a showcase of some of the finest bootlegs, mashups, and party tracks from the year as well as years past. It's meant to be one final kiss-off to the year that was welcoming in the new year to come. Over the years it's evolved into a massive set with some of the best party tracks from the past making it the must-have set for those celebrating with friends closer to home.
I have been bogged down this past week troubleshooting issues with the credit card payment processor for donations. I've since disabled it and pushed it out to the new year. If there's one thing folks that follow this podcast know about me is that I'm anal about every minor detail. This isn't so minor, and it really irritates the hell out of me when I pay $$$ for things that don't work, and the developer blames it on another developer's plugin, or my theme, or anything but them. I've performed all the standard troubleshooting to no avail, and they won't be able to help until after the 1st. That being said, you can still donate using the PayPal option, which also accepts credit cards if you don't have an account.
My focus had to be getting this final set out in time. As you can see, I'm a day late and a dollar short but the wait is worth it. Blow Your Own Horn 2019 was way harder than previous efforts. I don't know if it was because I was multi-tasking two completely separate things or that I'm worn out after running a marathon of mixes since Late October.
While I have not previewed the entire set yet, what I have heard so far has left me pleased. I think ya'll are really gonna love this!
2018 has been a tough slog trying to get through the daily minutia and Individual 1's constant barrage of self-serving lies, I mean tweets on a continual basis. Life is much easier when you don't follow much news or politics, but willful ignorance also leaves us without the knowledge to fight for change.
At the beginning of 2018, I originally planned on shutting down Party Favorz, but I persisted and forged on. I'm glad I did.
Frankly, I run this site by the seat of my pants coming up with one idea after another. Many of you have made suggestions for sets that I ultimately tackle, while others need more consideration. Regardless, it's a group effort, and I appreciate the input.
For now, I plan to keep the doors open at least through mid-April when my hosting expires. If I create a fundraiser for renewing my host, then you know I'm in it for the long haul. That has yet to be determined.
In the interim, I want to thank EVERYBODY from the bottom of my heart that donating to my efforts to bring you what I think is the best (or at least one of the best) dance music podcast that is going into its 12th year. Your loyalty means more to me than I can possibly express.
I hope everyone has a fun and safe New Year. I'll be back sometime in mid to late January with brand-new sets and a whole new look. Until then...ENJOY!
I just spent the last two hours troubleshooting issues with Wordpress that wouldn't allow me to post. Obviously, it's been resolved but you kinda get an idea as to the fresh hell I go through on a regular basis through no fault of my own. SMDH.

Top Dance Songs of 2018 Volume 3

Thursday Dec 27, 2018
Stepping back into the vibrant world of dance music for the year that was, let's explore the Top Dance Songs of 2018 that took the music scene by storm. This year marked a resurgence of Legacy artists, who contributed some of the most memorable dance club hits and carved a niche on our list of Top Dance Songs of 2018.
Prominent artists like Toni Braxton, Barbara Tucker, Crystal Waters, Donna Summer, and Diana Ross were particularly influential. Diana Ross's spectacular performance saw her clinching two number-one spots on the dance charts. However, our final selection of Top Dance Songs of 2018 included only her melodious rendition of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", while her "I'm Coming Out/Upside Down" medley, despite its conceptual appeal, was omitted due to less-than-stellar execution.
The year 2018 wasn't just about well-established names, though. Several artists like Dua Lipa, Cardi B, and Camila Cabello, who had broken into the limelight the previous year, continued to enjoy significant success. However, the year didn't birth any major new talents. While Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato had their fair share of successful releases, on the whole, the year's offerings were somewhat underwhelming.
The true heroes of the Top Dance Songs of 2018 were the DJs. Veterans like Eric Kupper, MK, StoneBridge, Barry Harris, and Dave Aude ensured dance music enthusiasts had plenty to groove to. David Guetta, now a legend in the industry, released a series of successful tracks that year. Similarly, Tiesto continued to demonstrate his relentless creativity and passion for music.
However, the Top Dance Songs of 2018 also had fresh names asserting their presence. Jonas Blue, Marshmello, and Zedd made people around the world move to their infectious beats, with Zedd claiming the coveted title of 'Song of the Year' with his hit "The Middle". Another promising talent, Purple Disco Machine, was the harbinger of a potential modern-day disco revival.
Calvin Harris, one of the most prodigious artists in the industry, perfectly encapsulated the state of EDM in 2018. Responding to a fan's query about his return to EDM, Harris stated, "EDM has been sad, slow songs for years now, doesn't have anything in common with the music I love to make. 2010-2014 EDM was more house-influenced to me. Anyway now I’m out the bubble and making big records with amazing singers that sound like house music to me."
The essence of his statement reflects the evolution of dance music since its inception in the late '70s. Despite the rise of genres like Reggaeton, Moonbatan, and Trap, many music lovers still crave the energetic, uplifting music that inspires them to dance – the kind that made it to our list of Top Dance Songs of 2018.
Stay tuned for more rhythmic delights, as our year-end party set, "Blow Your Own Horn 2019," is due for release soon. Until then, take a deep dive into the Top Dance Songs of 2018 and let the music guide your steps. Dance on!

Immerse yourself in a musical journey through the past as we present the Top Dance Songs of 2018. Party Favorz is taking you on a trip down memory lane, recalling the unforgettable hits that dominated the dance music scene. Party 2 of our year-end dance retrospective further enhances this musical extravaganza by including more of the year's most influential club hits!
A curious query arose from one of our followers recently regarding the usage of radio edits in our mixes. The response, initially simplistic, turned out to be more complex than a straightforward 'yes' or 'no'. The reality lies somewhere in the middle, so let's dive deeper.
In the era of streaming services, dance music, like most genres, is becoming increasingly influenced by this shift, especially by platforms like Spotify. This trend arguably took root in 2009 when Mariah Carey's album, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel", was extensively remixed by Jump Smokers, leading to a collection of dance radio edits rather than full-length dance tracks. While these tracks were not DJ-friendly, it signaled the beginning of a trend for shorter, more condensed "dance remixes".
As we fast forward to the year 2018, a significant proportion of remixes adopted this shorter format. The reason? Streaming platforms operate in a similar vein to traditional radio stations, providing on-demand music without the ads, and they favor quick, accessible listens before moving onto the next track. Extended intros and outros don't fit this model, and hence the shift towards more condensed tracks.
This evolution posed a challenge for DJs, stuck between delivering popular songs and preserving the art of mixing. The solution is a delicate balance, combining the shorter edits with longer dance remixes to maintain a seamless flow. Although this approach might dampen the traditional joy of mixing, it offers a practical way forward, especially for the future of remixing like on the Top Dance Songs of 2018.
This shift towards 'Spotify-ready' music is not universal, however. Genres like Tech House, Funky House, and Circuit-Tribal music still release full-length dance tracks.
Another interesting trend observed in 2018 was the emergence of labels focused on producing dance music tailored for streaming platforms like Spotify or Apple Music. Their business model is based on the number of streams generated rather than music sales. This approach has led to the creation of some excellent dance tracks that, sadly, may never grace club DJ decks, despite being included in the list of Top Dance Songs of 2018.
Despite these developments, platforms like Spotify still restrict the inclusion of dance music podcasts, like Party Favorz. Even though these podcasts offer a unique, non-stop music experience that complements their curated playlists, they remain absent from these platforms. Allowing such content could generate additional revenue streams for artists and publishers, and broaden the variety of music available to listeners.
As Party Favorz enters its 12th year of delivering high-quality dance music podcasts, it would be beneficial to gain recognition from leading players in the streaming industry. With an impressive five million streams or downloads globally and a solid listener base even without social promotion, it's clear that our selection of Top Dance Songs of 2018, and indeed every year, resonate with music lovers worldwide.
I'll be back tomorrow with the final installment of the Top Dance Songs of 2018. Until then...ENJOY!

Delve into the dynamic dance music landscape of the Top Dance Songs of 2018, featuring the most invigorating and pulse-quickening Dance Club hits of the year! For newcomers to this series, the Top Dance Songs of the Year is a compilation of the biggest dance songs from various music spectrums from the preceding year.
Party Favorz curates this unique collection, amalgamating tracks from Billboard's Year-End Charts for Dance Club Songs, Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, and remixed versions from the Hot 100 Songs that typically don't chart. We also include personal favorites that have left a significant impression over the year. Previously, Beatport charts were used for this process, but they seem to have discontinued their year-end summaries.
Reflecting on the year, 2018 did not leave an indelible mark in the dance music scene as one might have hoped. A considerable fraction of the year's top dance hits actually peaked in 2017, hence the Top Dance Songs of 2018 list includes tracks from the previous year as well. Iconic examples like "Something Just Like This" by The Chainsmokers & Coldplay, "Silence" by Marshmello featuring Khalid, "It Ain't Me" by Kygo x Selena Gomez appear on the year-end charts, suggesting that the new releases perhaps lacked the resonant appeal of their predecessors.
Looking at the broader trend, dance music seemed to lean heavily on trends that have already reached their zenith of popularity. From the Deep House frenzy of 2015 evolving into Future House and anthemic tunes, to the current fascination with Moombahton's slow, rolling beats — a style rooted in Latinx music, dance music trends of 2018 seem to lack originality. Even Reggaeton and Trap music, once fresh and exciting, now seem to have overstayed their welcome, with little indication of what the next big trend could be.
As we take stock of the Top Dance Songs of 2018, it's clear that the music industry needs to address some systemic issues. Billboard's charts, for instance, require a revamp to avoid single artists monopolizing chart positions with album releases, a phenomenon exacerbated by the inclusion of streaming service data. This over-saturation dilutes the diversity and quality of charting music.
Despite these challenges, dance music in 2018 wasn't entirely without merit. The underground scene continues to thrive and there's an increasing yearning for a resurgence of Disco (NuDisco) and Funk. Given the tumultuous and uncertain times we live in, these feel-good genres could provide the much-needed escape and joy we all crave.
As we look ahead, we'll explore the 'Spotification' of dance music in our next piece, followed by a deep dive into the key DJs/Producers/Remixers who left their mark on the Top Dance Songs of 2018, and the potential path forward for the genre. For now, sit back, press play, and relish the rhythmic journey that was 2018.
Until the next time...ENJOY!
