Erasure | The DIVA Dance Legacy Tribute Volume 2
Sunday Feb 19, 2017
Sunday Feb 19, 2017
Step back into the '90s, and prepare to be swept away by the iconic sounds of Erasure, the electrifying duo that defined a generation's dance scene. Welcome to Volume 2 of our Erasure DIVA Dance Legacy Tribute, a musical journey where synthpop meets soaring vocals in a mesmerizing combination. This volume focuses on the group's '90s era, a pivotal time that saw them navigating new technological advancements while delivering infectious melodies that were impossible to ignore.
Let's kick things off with the invigorating remake of the Blondie classic "Rapture." This remix amplifies the original Erasure essence, breathing new life into a classic. Matt Darey ingeniously twists the knobs, adding percussive elements and building up the atmospheric layers to create a soundscape that grabs you from the very first beat.

Now, let's talk about freedom—the Erasure style, of course. "Freedom" is a euphoric rollercoaster that invites you to embrace liberation on your own terms. Mark Picchiotti strums the guitar strings just enough to add a dash of rock flair to Erasure's synth-soaked terrain, making for a sublime auditory experience.
While we're on the subject of transcendent experiences, "In My Arms" takes emotional resonance to new heights. With its haunting lyrics and Dekkard's skillful vocal treatment, this remix underscores the poignant elements that Erasure is known for. It's a love anthem that will have you floating on air, reminiscing about those unforgettable moments wrapped in the arms of someone special.
But let's not overlook the gripping remake of the Peter Gabriel classic "Solsbury Hill." In this rendition, Manhattan Clique serves a magnetic remix, complete with pulsating beats and synthetic waves that elevate Erasure's original masterpiece. It's a track that evokes the spirit of '90s dance floors, while also feeling at home in any contemporary playlist.

What makes Erasure particularly compelling is their knack for balance. They've managed to walk the line between keeping true to their roots and embracing the continual evolution of electronic music. Andy Bell's mesmerizing vocals mesh perfectly with Vince Clarke's expert instrumentation, a blend that has kept us dancing for decades.
Whether you're a lifelong Erasure fan or a newcomer intrigued by their timeless beats, this DIVA Dance Legacy Tribute is an immersive experience. It's a tribute not just to the duo's musical genius but also to the DJs and artists who have reshaped and remixed their works for a new generation of dance aficionados. From Matt Darey to Mark Picchiotti, Dekkard to Manhattan Clique, these remixes offer a fresh perspective on an already stellar musical portfolio.
So if you're looking to revisit the '90s with an electrifying Erasure-centric experience, look no further. The legacy of Erasure is one that can't be ignored, capturing hearts and invigorating dance floors since their inception. Until the next time...ENJOY!

In the twilight of 1986, I found myself back in my hometown, rebooting life after a pause post-high school. As fate would have it, I returned to C&C Music/Video—a place that had worked for during my high school years. Erasure's "Oh L'amour" was already setting dance floors on fire, but honestly, I hadn't deeply considered the duo behind the beats. That changed, and how, when their extended play album "The Two Ring Circus" was released.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFduy8qQIOg
Before we dive into the Erasure saga, let's step back a bit. Vince Clarke, one half of Erasure, was already a synth-pop legend due to his earlier stints with Depeche Mode and Yaz (known as Yazoo in Europe). It was the blending of Clarke's genius with Andy Bell's vocal prowess that gave Erasure its distinct sound—a combination that felt like a revelation to my young, queer self. Their lyrics, sharp and universally relatable, had a unique resonance for the LGBTQ+ community.
Now, let's talk songs, shall we? "Victim of Love" is a tune that forever evokes bittersweet nostalgia. It carries me back to memories of Michael, a man 20 years my senior who became a mentor and friend during those formative years. He tried to enrich my life with opera and introduced me to the camp classic "Mommie Dearest." We crossed the line from friendship to romance and his memory lives on each time I play "Victim of Love." For some inexplicable reason, it's our song.
Fast forward to Erasure's album "Wild!" and the gem "Star," a song inseparably tied to the love of my life Pete. A charismatic guy who I thought was my romantic endgame, Pete turned into a life lesson on the power of unchecked emotions. Our fallout was nasty, something I've never been proud of. Years later, in a coincidental encounter at a local gay club, we finally managed to lay old ghosts to rest. "Star" has become a poignant reminder of what was, what could have been, and the wisdom that came from it.
The lines "Sent you money sent you flowers, could worship you for hours, in whose hands are we anyway?" and "Did you ever have a lover, leave you for another, to take your love and kisses for granted? Never to discover, war is not the answer, leave you only disenchanted" from that song really sank my heart.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU4xdsMbQ28
Creating this Erasure tribute mix was an emotional rollercoaster, to say the least. Each track, carefully selected, represents their early brilliance encapsulated in "Pop! The First 20 Hits," with a few other gems sprinkled in. Vince Clarke's eloquent lyrics and Andy Bell's unparalleled voice make Erasure an indelible part of not just my story, but countless others. And let me tell you, assembling this mix was a labor of love and respect. I was terrified I wouldn't do Erasure justice, but if I can say so myself, the result is something pretty fabulous.
With a sense of profound honor, I hereby enshrine Erasure into our Diva Hall of Fame and Legacy series. This tribute is more than just a walk down memory lane; it's a homage to the impact Erasure has had on our lives and the queer community at large. It's dedicated to Michael and Pete, figures who have played significant roles in my life's narrative, forever linked by the music of Erasure.
Until the next time...ENJOY!

So my last post for Pump Up the Volume was a hot mess of ideas. I've gone back and provided more coherence to my ramblings so as to follow-up with this final set.
These days, I've got a lot of ideas running through my tiny brain and the more I read in the Washington Post and the New York Times about our government, the more angry I get. I try to stay away from the Huffington Post because it's becoming more and more like the progressive left version Breibart (an alt-right nationalist rag). Mind you, I'm not talking about go out and blow-up a bunch of people anarchistic anger but definitely there is a frustration as to how I can channel what I'm seeing into what it is I already do and how that ties in with the electronic music that I promote on these very pages. This leads me to my final musings of the electronic dance music of the 80's.
One of the genres I intertwined with this series was called 'industrial', which was an offshoot of punk. It was poetry laced with anger set to a repetitive electronic beat. While the lyrics to songs like 'Headhunter' by Front 242 and 'Join in the Chant' by Nitzer Ebb may be simplistic, their relevance today cannot be understated. Mixed in with the sugar-coated more commercial elements of the movement, the meaning gets lost. Taken by themselves, the anger and frustration of the times was as illuminating then as they are pertinent today. To be frank, I don't what these groups politics are and the left definitely do not have the market cornered on rebellion.
Right now you're probably scratching your head thinking to yourself 'what the fuck does this have to do with anything; I just like these songs and remember them well???'
For those that have read my posts over the years, understand that I've been a predictor of dance music trends since I started Party Favorz in 2007. The easiest way to do that is look at what's going on in the underground. Beatport has been a good indicator of that since I started this site. What I'm seeing and hearing is a ton of music that's moving away from the EPIC to a darker and more sinister pinning of electronic dance. It's not a mistake that Prok & Fitch with Green Velevet's 'Sheeple' was number for all of January and is still in their top ten.
Don't get me wrong. I will continue to deliver the light and frothy commercial dance music we've all come to know and love from my podcasts. That will never change but...
...I do fully expect continued darkness in the music but with sharper and more pointed political messages in the very near future. I'm just waiting for the DJ's and producers to properly channel their anger into something that grabs a wider audience rather than the current output which sounds like toddlers playing with tinker toys.
Things are moving rapidly in the US and the UK and soon Germany, France and possibly other countries as well. With massive social change, ultimately comes unrest and dissent, which in turn leads to protest. This time, it will likely be bigger and louder than ever before. I will do what I can in my limited capacity to express that frustration and anger visually and musically. I'm thinking the Deep Edition will be a good place to start. You heard it here first.
Forget everything I just wrote. Just know that Party Favorz will keep on keeping on but there may be changes in the way I present things up ahead. Until the next time...ENJOY!

Continuing where we left off yesterday, the 80's was a dearth of diversity in musical styles. The primary focus over these three volumes includes industrial music and it's more commercial off-spring.
If anyone watches AMC's 'Catch and Halt' Fire' you get a really good feel for the time, the music and the burgeoning scene in computers in the early 80's. My best friend Dan had purchased a used Mackintosh from the local pawn shop along with a dot matrix printer. You know the kind, the paper had holes down the side so it could move along as it was being printed. The only thing he could really do on his computer was type his school papers and print them. Of course, he could also play ping pong or space invaders, which was pretty cool. Dan took his passion for computers and landed a gig with the burgeoning Dell computers there in Austin. Everybody knows who Dell is, so I'd say Dan is sitting pretty at the movement.
Our other friend SJ or Sequoya disappeared off the face of the earth when his father called him back home for good. He had a drinking problem that he just couldn't keep under control, which was a shame because he was a super nice guy. I think he's married and a lawyer now or something. Then there's Dale. An unfortunate accident stemming from a nasty divorce that had left him permanently scarred and financially ruined took him years to get out from under it. Last I heard, he found his calling and was living in a commune smoking a bunch of pot.
Me, I was just s shithead going to clubs on 6th street in Austin and sneaking out at night to hook up with some strangers in an alley.
It wasn't until ten years later that I purchased my first computer at the end of the semester in 1998 and spent the winter break taking it apart and putting it back together again to better understand how it worked. That was the point I officially became a geek.
The music at the time stands for itself and I'll go into more of its darker underpinnings in the next post. Until then...ENJOY!

After last year's 70s indulgence with the Trash Disco series, Party Favorz is moving a decade forward. In typical fashion, I try to do something that's not so obvious, which better reflects who I was and what I was into by the end of the decade which was the 80s.
I was a disco kid heading into high school and dabbled in Punk and New Wave but then quickly adjusted my tastes to fit in with the other kids. AC/DC (who I still love), Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Scorpions, and down the line fueled me. By the end of the decade, I was the preppy kid hanging with the cool kids dressed in black with earrings and eyeliner (much to the dismay of my parents) listening to the coolest music by New Order, Erasure, Depeche Mode, etc., and smoking a lot of pot while occasionally dropping acid. It's not a path I would recommend to anyone today but if I'm being real...
It was the decade of Vans (which I had), OP (Ocean Pacific for the uninitiated), Levis 501 button-fly jeans, Izod, and shitty (hideous) clothing from Oak Tree and the Limited; Just look at any Rick Astley video or even Depeche Mode and you'll understand. For the most part, I was a geek with good taste in music (or at least I like to think so).
Truth is, I'm a music addict. I enjoy almost all forms of it from the crude and crass (Dead Kennedys, Plasmatics) to the most commercial (Tiffany, Debbie Gibson). I can't explain my tastes but they run the whole spectrum.
These next three sets reflect a certain period of my life that I fondly remember. Many of today's artists are diving back into the pool for inspiration, so don't be surprised if something sounds all too familiar.
Frankly, after working my magic, these songs have never sounded better. ENJOY!

Rick had his car towed to the dealership last night because his tire blew out. He gets free tires for life, so he had his car towed to the Atlanta dealership 20 miles away. I got up early this morning to drive him to the dealership so he could pick it up and get to work. During that ride, I finally had the opportunity to confirm what I already knew about the first Circuit set of the year. That is; it kicks some serious ASS!
The sun was out and at a cool 40 degrees with the windows down, the heat on high, and the stereo blaring with a Starbucks coffee in one hand and the other on the steering wheel, I could've driven all morning long. The Winter Edition 2k17 is a serious workout that has more energy than 10 cans of Red Bull.
Our favorite San Francisco label Swishcraft is leading the pack with four entries followed by our 'IT' boys of the moment Barry Harris and Dan Thomas.
The full remixes are out on Donna Summer & Barbra Streisand's eponymous late-70s disco duet 'Enough Is Enough'. While the overall package is a little less creative than I would have liked the two standouts are Offer Nissim's take (featured in last month's Holiday Edition 2k16 pt. 2) and now our favorite BOYS from Houston, Mark D. & JD Arnold a.k.a. Dirty Disco.
Speaking of which, they teamed up with one of our favorite (albeit disgraced) DIVAS Kim English for a new uplifting, energetic version of her former number one 'Treat Me Right' complete with all new vocals. Much like Donna Summer, I have it in my heart for forgiveness; especially when someone's work speaks to me and has provided so much meaning throughout my life.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention another one of our favorite DIVAS, Miss LeAnn Rimes. The woman is back and packing a punch with 'Long Live Love'. I've included the knuckle-dragging Ivan Gomez mix here but don't pass up on the Dave Aude version which is as good.
I could go on and on about the songs in this set but that could take a couple of pages. Every 1's a winner and a guaranteed treat for your ears and ass.
Since I'm treating every one to two different sets this week (don't forget I just dropped the latest Dance set 'Dance Sessions Winter 2017' yesterday, I likely won't be releasing anything next week. You've got over 4 hours of solid tunes to get your party started.
I also want to take this opportunity to give a HUGE shout out to these fantastic folks for their donations to my ongoing efforts: David B. $50; Ignacio G. $10; Billy G. $10 & Gary B. $10. All money goes right back into this site. My total costs for January were close to $250 so this was a massive help.
Next up, I'll be working on some new BackSpin's that will take us into the 80's and some brand-spanking new DIVA series.
Until then...ENJOY!

This week, Party Favorz is going big and I mean really BIG! There is so much fantastic electronic dance music coming out at the moment my computer is bursting at the seams.
We're gonna kick your weekend off with the first straight-up club set of the year. The Winter Dance Sessions features some of the hottest club hits you're likely grooving to now as well as future hits you'll be digging into in a couple of months.
I rounded this out with some underground hits that are making a lot of noise that gives everyone a taste of things to come for 2017. I did this set in one take and it was flawless on my first preview. Then more and more hot tracks kept coming out so I dropped in a couple of them and am rushing this out before I muck it up.
The same thing with the Circuit set coming out tomorrow. I gotta stop while I'm ahead LOL.
I'll be back tomorrow with the Winter Edition for the circuit boys. Until then...ENJOY!

Welcome to the 2017 Funky House inaugural edition. Eh, just kidding.
I was going to put this out tomorrow morning but I figured a lot of you may need the diversion sooner rather than later.
If you can believe it, I'm currently at a loss for words. I'd like to smoke a joint but I haven't done that in 10 years and don't have any lying around.
I guess I'll just slam a few beers; pop an Ambien and try to sleep it off.

Folks, there has been a complete sea-change in the music that's coming out. It's like I've been fast-forwarded into another place and time. Take a look at the charts at Beatport and Traxsource. The top 10 in each of these are seriously dark and not the typical fare you'd normally expect. Sure, Beatport is famous for seriously fucked-up tracks in their top tiers that make you wonder if someone isn't manipulating the songs to get them ranked higher but this darkness has been going on for a couple of months now.
I generally find that current trends in underground house music are a reflection of the times. Let's just say folks are getting more cynical. I alluded to this in my 2017 kickoff post The Best Dance Music Podcast PERIOD! | 10-Year Anniversary. More people are using TOR to surf the net and more and more of us have turned to What's App and Signal for our personal communications. These are scary times and the music is a reflection of those sentiments.
Now, I'm not here to rouse everyone but when I found out that free sites like Family Tree Now give out a lot of personal information like your home address, previous address, phone numbers, current and past relationships, family members, and on down the line to anyone and everyone who looks you up; this shit is getting creepy. Fortunately, you can opt-out and I would HIGHLY recommend it.
Far be it for me to spoil your fun. So, I spent the better part of a day combing through promos, Beatport, Traxsource, and Junodownload to complete this and next week's Funky House set to pull together some of the freshest beats that don't make you want to slit your wrists. Most of this stuff leans towards House Music but there are some Techno and Tech House tunes to round it out. Forget about Deep House cause that genre has gone off the rails. Nevertheless, I worked this shit OUT!
The weather has been pretty awesome for the past several days so it would be a shame if I don't take advantage of it. I'll be back next week with the next installment of FunkyDiscoHouseShit for everyone. From what I can tell, that is gonna put a smile on your face.
Until then...ENJOY!

Blow Your Own Horn 2017

Folks, this is it! It's that time of year that Party Favorz blows the roof off this 2016 motherfucker with our annual Blow Your Own Horn! This is the defacto epic dance party set to bring in your New Year.
This year we lost David Bowie, Prince, George Michael and now Carrie Fisher a.k.a. Princess Leia. It almost feels like my youth has been suddenly ripped out from underneath me. After everyone said it would never happen, we elected an egotistical, self-serving, lying hypocritical, sexists prick to the highest office in the land. Ya'll said you wanted change; wait 'cause you're gonna get it.
It's also been the year of Russia, Russia, Russia. No offense to the Russians that subscribe to this site (cause I know there is a shitload of you), but I don't want to see RT show up in my Google feed ANYMORE; I don't want to read about how Russia hacked into the DNC and floated all this crap to that douche Julian Assange from Wikileaks. One step out of that embassy (if they don't throw you out first) and your happy ass is going to land here in the US courtesy of the Swiss. Then there's some Russian fucktard hacking everyone's Google Analytics account (mine included) with some fucked up pro-Trump message. Not sure what that was about other than being an annoying prick. I can't even open up the New York Times, Washington Post or Washington Journal without some headline news about Russia. Here's the real news; Russia, we're just not that into you.
So, I'll just let this all wash over me with a new year to look forward to. Then again, it'll likely be the same shit; just a different year LOL.
Hey, I'll get off my soapbox because it's looking like an awesome day outside. Besides, I know we have several Trump supporters on here (including my parents) as most are good people. Equally, all the Russian folks that subscribe to Party Favorz, obviously have good taste so we welcome you!
That being said, I want to give a shout-out to these awesome folks for their donations: David B. $50; Michael M. $10 and Charles B. $40. You guys ROCK!
Party Favorz will be taking an extended break for as long as I can stand not mixing anything which usually lasts about 2 weeks before I give in to the urge to slap a couple of songs together LOL.
I hope everyone has a healthy and happy New Year. I'll see ya'll sometime in the next.
Until then...ENJOY!

George Michael: A Dance Mix Tribute Volume 2

In the wake of George Michael's sudden passing, it became clear that a mere update of his 2010 induction into the Diva Hall of Fame wouldn't suffice. So, with a heavy heart but determined focus, we set out to remaster and reimagine a dance tribute mix that would do justice to his extensive repertoire and undeniable influence on music and pop culture.
Starting from scratch, we meticulously remastered each song, whether it was slated for inclusion or not, dedicating two full days to this labor of love. The end result? A tribute that can only be described as 'Flawless.'
Back in 2010, the original tribute had an extra dose of compression, primarily due to the track 'As,' George Michael's duet with Mary J. Blige. Thanks to Jonathan Peters' mastering techniques, the song could practically blow a hole in the ceiling. It set the tone for the whole mix back then, especially when earbuds were not as advanced as they are today. But times have changed, and so have audio capabilities. That gave us the freedom to achieve a balanced and more nuanced sound.
Let's talk about some gems in the tribute. Take "I Want Your Sex 2010 (Freemasons Club Mix)," for instance. The Freemasons bring a modern electro flair to this '80s classic, delivering a robust bassline that's impossible to ignore. And then there's the "Fast Love (2002 Illicit Remix)." With this version, the Illicit team reinvents George Michael's hit by infusing fresh beats and rhythms, making it perfect for today's dance floors.
Don't overlook the "Outside (Hex Hector 12'' Vox Up Mix)," a song with a history. After his public outing following an arrest, George Michael embraced his identity and turned the incident into this empowering track. Hex Hector's remix elevates it to new heights, making it a dance floor anthem for the ages.
Wham! classics like "I'm Your Man (Division 4 Club Mix)" and "Everything She Wants (Todd Terry Mix)" also find their rightful place in the mix. They're not just nostalgic trips; these remixes celebrate George Michael's beginnings while anchoring them firmly in contemporary dance music.
In closing, we hope this tribute captures not just the breadth of George Michael's musical prowess, but also the depth of his influence and the complexity of his legacy.
RIP George. You will be sorely missed. [1963 - 2016].

George Michael: A Dance Mix Tribute Volume 1

From teen idol to international superstar to a figure of resilience, George Michael's multifaceted journey has left an indelible impact on the music world. Not just a pop icon, he became an influential voice in the LGBTQ+ community following his arrest for solicitation, which effectively outed him as a gay man. Far from shying away, George Michael embraced this chapter of his life, using his platform to advocate for acceptance and equality.
While his personal life may have seen its share of controversies and struggles, his musical prowess remains unquestionable. Whether it's the Wham! classic "Everything She Wants," remixed brilliantly here by Todd Terry, or his solo work in albums like the groundbreaking "Faith," George Michael's artistry transcends genre and era.
Take a moment to revisit his album "Listen Without Prejudice," often cited as one of the most underrated gems of the '90s according to music critics. The lyrical depth and vocal execution in this album are proof of Michael's unparallelled talent. His words reveal a vulnerability that resonated deeply with his audience.
The rich declare themselves poorAnd most of us are not sureIf we have too much but we'll take our chances'Cause God's stopped keeping scoreI guess somewhere along the wayHe must have let us all out to playTurned His back and all God's childrenCrept out the back door
And it's hard to loveThere's so much to hateHanging on to hopeWhen there is no hope to speak ofAnd the wounded skies aboveSay it's much, too much, too lateWell, maybe we should all be praying for time
Now, let's delve into the dance tribute mix honoring George Michael's dance floor repertoire. "Star People '97 (Forthright Club Mix)" serves as a potent opener, setting the mood with its vibrant beats and rhythmic complexity. Then there's the Sharp Boys remix of "Flawless" which was also a #1 club hit by The Ones and samples the disco classic "Keep On Dancing" by Gary's Gang and another disco classic "Romero and Juliet" by Alec R. Costandinos adds a layer of effervescence to the already buoyant original.
"I Want Your Sex 2010" follows suit, revamping a classic George Michael tune with a contemporary touch from the Freemasons, widely praised for their mixing skills. The addition of "Amazing" adds a groovy, upbeat House vibe to the tribute mix, thanks to Full Intention's masterful remixing.
One cannot talk about George Michael's dance music without mentioning "Outside." Not just a club hit, this song became a statement piece after his arrest, turned into a celebration of freedom and self-acceptance. Hex Hector's remix elevates it even further, adding a sense of liberation to a classic Disco House beat with masterful sound layering.
Lastly, the "Fast Love 2002 (Illicit Remix)" which samples the 80s Disco classic "Forget Me Nots" by Patrice Rushen comes on like a nostalgia trip, revamped for the new millennium but still holding its '90s essence at the core, much like George Michael himself.
Though controversies and legal battles have sometimes clouded George Michael's legacy, his significance as a trailblazer in pop music and as an openly gay icon cannot be overstated. Personal tribulations aside, his dramatic life only adds layers to what makes him an everlasting DIVA in the realm of music and culture.
George Michael, you've forever left your mark on music and society. Your induction into our Legacy Dance Tribute series is both an honor and a testament to your everlasting influence.
